Sonoma County’s Legacy Book Program: Empowering Seniors Through Storytelling

At Tellegacy, we believe that every life has a story worth sharing, and our partnership with the Council on Aging in Sonoma County exemplifies the impact that storytelling can have. As Marianne McBride, President and CEO of the Council on Aging, shared in a recent discussion, their program empowers seniors by helping them document and preserve their life stories through personalized legacy books.

The Tellegacy Program in Sonoma County is more than just a way to capture memories—it’s a powerful tool to combat social isolation. Each participant is paired with a dedicated Tellegacy volunteer who helps guide them through the process of reflecting on and documenting their experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Over the course of several weeks, these stories are compiled into a beautifully bound book that seniors can cherish and pass down to their loved ones.
For many seniors, the process of creating a legacy book is a deeply meaningful experience. It provides them with an opportunity to reconnect with their past, celebrate their achievements, and leave behind a lasting legacy. As McBride emphasizes, “The legacy book is not just for the individual; it’s a gift to their family, providing them with a tangible reminder of their loved one’s life and experiences.”
In addition to fostering connections between seniors and their families, the program also creates meaningful bonds between seniors and the volunteers who help them. These intergenerational relationships help bridge the gap between different life stages, reminding us all of the importance of listening, learning, and sharing.
The impact of these books is immeasurable. As we continue to expand the Legacy Book Program, we are proud to see the joy and fulfillment it brings to seniors across communities, reminding them—and all of us—that every life story deserves to be heard and preserved.
