When Tellegacy was founded, Dr. Holloway was deeply moved by the loneliness older adults were experiencing—particularly during the pandemic, when many were unable to see their friends and family in person. The need for connection was urgent, and Tellegacy provided a bridge between generations, offering companionship and support. But as the program grew, something became increasingly clear: loneliness is not exclusive to older adults. People from all backgrounds, across different ages and life stages, are experiencing isolation in profound ways.

Loneliness Across Ages: A Growing Concern

Recent research confirms that loneliness is affecting people across all demographics. According to a Harvard Graduate School of Education report, more than 36% of Americans—including 61% of young adults—report serious loneliness (Harvard Loneliness Report). Additionally, studies by The National Institute on Aging suggest that social isolation can have detrimental effects on mental and physical health across all age groups (NIA Research).

Whether someone is navigating a divorce, dealing with major life decisions, or undergoing a career transition, social connection remains a vital part of human well-being. Loneliness isn’t just about physical isolation—it’s about emotional disconnection. The pandemic only heightened this reality, but it has always existed.

University Students & Unexpected Friendships

One of the most remarkable aspects of Tellegacy has been witnessing how university students, who initially joined to support older adults, quickly formed deep and meaningful connections. Many of them informally adopted their older adult partners as friends, grandparents, and mentors. The benefits flowed both ways.

Students have shared how these relationships have directly influenced their personal and professional growth. Some of these connections have endured far beyond the initial program, transforming into lasting friendships. University students quickly informally adopted their older adult partners as their grandparents and in many cases mentors and they’ve seen positive life change in their lives because of it. Students succeeded in their job interviews because of the advice that an older adult gave to them. Just recently, two Legacy Builder students shared that they still regularly meet and walk with their older adult partners four years after participating in the program. ❤️

Why Connection Matters in Life Transitions

Social support is crucial during times of transition. Whether it’s young adults adjusting to post-college life, mid-career professionals making life-changing decisions, or retirees finding a new sense of purpose, connection can provide guidance, encouragement, and stability.

According to The American Psychological Association, social support enhances resilience, improves mental health, and even leads to better career outcomes (APA Research). When people feel heard and valued, they develop a stronger sense of purpose and belonging.
