In a world often divided by generational gaps, a unique partnership is proving that connection is timeless. Through the Tellegacy program, nursing students from Mount Carmel College, supported by MediGold Health Insurance, are mak extraordinary connections with older adults—transforming lives on both ends of the relationship.
Over 100 Mount Carmel nursing students participated in this intergenerational program, demonstrating the profound power of conversation. The program pairs students with older adults for weekly, hour-long conversations over several weeks. Purposed to be more than just chats; the curriculum intended for a meaningful exchange of stories, experiences, and wisdom that reveal the transformative potential of simply being present for one another.
For the older adults, the experience was often described as a lifeline. Many participants had shared how these connections alleviated loneliness and brought renewed joy to their lives. One older adult remarked, “Talking to my student each week felt like having a window to the future. They cared about my story, and that made me feel valued.”
The students also experienced personal and professional growth beyond their expectations. Engaging deeply with older adults helped them develop empathy, cultural humility, and an appreciation for holistic care. One nursing student reflected, “Hearing their challenges and triumphs made me realize the importance of human connection in healthcare. It’s not just about clinical care—it’s about the person.”
The storytelling and listening components of Tellegacy were integral to its success. The program aligned seamlessly with Mount Carmel’s mission to prepare compassionate healthcare professionals who understand the value of addressing patients’ emotional and social needs alongside their physical health.
Through these meaningful interactions, the program demonstrated the profound impact of social connection on health outcomes. Older adults reported reduced feelings of isolation and increased well-being, while students left the program with a deeper understanding of the role of connection in healthcare.
Dr. Holloway: “Tellegacy is more than a program; it’s a movement toward creating a society where no one feels forgotten.” With the support of MediGold Health Insurance and the dedication of Mount Carmel students, this initiative worked to build bridges across generations—one conversation at a time
The purpose of the program was to celebrate the power of connection and create an opportunity to express kindness, so that any environment can be utilized to help everyone feel valued, heard, and supported.
